never had it de-programmed.  This has been true with two seperate SNK's.
No, the first one didn't die... I changed jobs.  I have also replaced the
batteries in many SNK's without blanking the card.  As a matter of fact
a large batch of SNKs that we got had nearly dead batteries.  I won't use
that distributer again!  I bought new batteries at the local drugstore and
the calculators were back in production.
