PLATFORM: SPARC Platform Mozilla 1.7 (for Solaris 8, 9, 10) x86 Platform Mozilla 1.7 (for Solaris 8, 9, 10) Note: Mozilla 1.4 may be vulnerable to one or more of these security issues. Customers are advised to upgrade to Mozilla 1.7 to get the security fixes once they are available. DAMAGE: May cause the Mozilla application to crash or execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running Mozilla. SOLUTION: Please see the workaround in the bulletin below. A final resolution is pending completion. ______________________________________________________________________________ VULNERABILITY The risk is MEDIUM. May cause the Mozilla application to crash ASSESSMENT: or execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running Mozilla. ______________________________________________________________________________ LINKS: CIAC BULLETIN: http://www.ciac.org/ciac/bulletins/s-070.shtml ORIGINAL BULLETIN: http://www.sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1 -26-103139-1 CVE: http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name= CVE-2006-5748 ______________________________________________________________________________ [***** Start Sun Alert ID: 103139 *****] Sun(sm) Alert Notification Sun Alert ID: 103139 Synopsis: Multiple Security Vulnerabilities in the JavaScript Engine in Mozilla 1.7 for Solaris 8, 9 and 10 Category: Security Product: Mozilla v1.7, Solaris 9 Operating System, Solaris 10 Operating System, Solaris 8 Operating System BugIDs: 6501194 Avoidance: Workaround State: Workaround Date Released: 08-Nov-2007 Date Closed: Date Modified: 1. Impact The JavaScript Engine in the Mozilla 1.7 application (see mozilla(1)) contains multiple memory corruption vulnerabilities which may allow a remote user who is able to create a web page which is visited by a local user using the Mozilla browser, or who sends a specially crafted email that is read by a local user using Mozilla, to either cause the Mozilla application to crash or execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running Mozilla. The ability of a remote user to cause the Mozilla application to crash is a type of Denial of Service (DoS). The following Mozilla advisory describes 15 separate memory corruption issues: http://www.mozilla.org/security/announce/2006/mfsa2006-65.html This Sun Alert corresponds to the 10 JavaScript engine issues described in the Mozilla advisory under CVE-2006-5748. Note that of these 10 vulnerabilities, Mozilla 1.7 is only affected by the following six issues: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=349527 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=351973 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=350238 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=351116 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=352606 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=354924 Additional references: CVE-2006-5748 at: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-5748 CERT VU#390480 at: http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/390480 CERT Technical Cyber Security Alert TA06-312A at: http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/techalerts/TA06-312A.html 2. Contributing Factors These issues can occur in the following releases: SPARC Platform Mozilla 1.7 (for Solaris 8) Mozilla 1.7 (for Solaris 9) Mozilla 1.7 (for Solaris 10) x86 Platform Mozilla 1.7 (for Solaris 8) Mozilla 1.7 (for Solaris 9) Mozilla 1.7 (for Solaris 10) Note: Mozilla 1.4 may be vulnerable to one or more of these security issues. Customers are advised to upgrade to Mozilla 1.7 to get the security fixes once they are available. To determine the version of Mozilla on a Solaris system, the following command can be run: % /usr/sfw/bin/mozilla -version Mozilla 1.7, (Sun Java Desktop System), build 2005031721 3. Symptoms There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate the described issues have been exploited. Solution Summary Top 4. Relief/Workaround To work around the issues described in this Sun Alert, disable JavaScript by doing the following: Open the "Preferences" dialog from the Edit menu Select the "Advanced" tree Select the "Scripts & Plug-ins" leaf Uncheck the "Navigator" and "Mail & Newsgroups" check boxes Click the "OK" button 5.
