PLATFORM: Red Hat Desktop (v. 3) Red Hat Desktop (v. 4) Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (v. 3) Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (v. 4) Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES (v. 3) Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES (v. 4) Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS (v. 3) Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS (v. 4) StarOffice 6.0, 7, 8 Office Suite Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 (sarge) DAMAGE: An attacker could create a carefully crafted WMF file that could cause OpenOffice.org to execute arbitrary code when the file was opened by a victim. SOLUTION: Apply current patches. ______________________________________________________________________________ VULNERABILITY The risk is MEDIUM. An attacker could cause OpenOffice.org to ASSESSMENT: execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the targeted user. ______________________________________________________________________________ LINKS: CIAC BULLETIN: http://www.ciac.org/ciac/bulletins/r-098.shtml ORIGINAL BULLETIN: https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2007-0001.html ADDITIONAL LINKS: Sun Alert ID: 102735 http://www.sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey= 1-26-102735-1 Debian Security Advisory DSA-1246-1 http://www.debian.org/security/2007/dsa-1246 CVE: http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-5870 ______________________________________________________________________________ REVISION HISTORY: 01/09/2007 - revised to add a link to Sun Microsystems Sun Alert ID: 102735 for StarOffice 6.0, 7, 8 Office Suite and Debian Security Advisory DSA-1246-1 for Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 (sarge). This update has been rated as having important security impact by the Red Hat Security Response Team. OpenOffice.org is an office productivity suite that includes desktop applications such as a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, formula editor, and drawing program. Several integer overflow bugs were found in the OpenOffice.org WMF file processor. An attacker could create a carefully crafted WMF file that could cause OpenOffice.org to execute arbitrary code when the file was opened by a victim. (CVE-2006-5870) All users of OpenOffice.org are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which contain a backported fix for this issue. Solution Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata relevant to your system have been applied. This update is available via Red Hat Network. To use Red Hat Network, launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command: up2date This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate RPMs being upgraded on your system.
