SOTFWARE: Solaris 8 Update 1/01 (or later Solaris 8 Update Releases) DAMAGE: An unprivileged local user may be able to gain unauthorized root access or cause a denial of service. SOLUTION: Apply available patches. ______________________________________________________________________________ VULNERABILITY The risk is MEDIUM. An unprivileged local user may be able to ASSESSMENT: gain unauthorized root access. There are no symptoms that would show the described issue has already been exploited. ______________________________________________________________________________ LINKS: CIAC BULLETIN: http://www.ciac.org/ciac/bulletins/n-010.shtml ORIGINAL BULLETIN: http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/retrieve.pl?doc=fsalert% 2F48320&zone_32=category%3Asecurity PATCHES: http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/findPatch.pl? patchId=109134&rev=27 http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/findPatch.pl? patchId=109135&rev=27 ______________________________________________________________________________ [***** Start Sun Alert ID: 48320 *****] Sun(sm) Alert Notification Sun Alert ID: 48320 Synopsis: Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) on Solaris 8 Installs Insecure Files Category: Security Product: Solaris BugIDs: 4381755 Avoidance: Patch, Workaround State: Resolved Date Released: 28-Oct-2002 Date Closed: 28-Oct-2002 Date Modified: 1. Impact Installation of Solaris 8 Update 1/01 (or later Solaris 8 Update Releases) will by default install the Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) packages "SUNWwbdoc", "SUNWwbcou", "SUNWwbdev" and "SUNWmgapp". These packages install files with world and/or group write permissions. As a result, an unprivileged local user may be able to gain unauthorized root access or cause a denial of service. 2. Contributing Factors This issue can occur in the following releases: SPARC Solaris 8 Update 1/01 and later Solaris 8 Update releases without patch 109134- 27 Intel Solaris 8 Update 1/01 and later Solaris 8 Update releases without patch 109135- 27 Note: Solaris 9 is not affected. Note: Web-Based Enterprise Management was introduced in Solaris 8 Update 1/01 and is not supported on earlier Solaris releases (the contents of the "/etc/release" file reflects the currently installed Solaris release). Therefore, Solaris 8, Solaris 8 Update 6/00 and Solaris 8 Update 10/00 are not affected by this issue. Only systems that have one or more of the following packages installed are affected by this issue: SUNWwbdoc SUNWwbcou SUNWwbdev SUNWmgapp The pkginfo(1) command will display the currently installed packages. 3. Symptoms On affected systems, some files have group or world write permissions set, for example the "/usr/sadm/lib/wbem/cimomboot" as shown in the following example: $ ls -l /usr/sadm/lib/wbem/cimomboot -rwxrwxr-x 1 root sys 5128 Feb 23 2001 /usr/sadm/lib/wbem/cimomboot Other files with group or world write permissions set can be found in the "/usr/sadm" and "/usr/demo/wbem" directories. There are no symptoms that would show the described issue has already been exploited to gain unauthorized root access to a system. Solution Summary Top 4. Relief/Workaround To work around the described issue, remove group and world write permissions from affected files by running the following command as the root user: # find /usr/sadm /usr/demo/wbem \( -perm -0020 -o -perm -0002 \) -exec chmod go-w {} \; 5. Resolution This issue is addressed in the following releases: SPARC Solaris 8 with patch 109134-27 or later Intel Solaris 8 with patch 109135-27 or later This Sun Alert notification is being provided to you on an "AS IS" basis.
